Holiday driving tips to keep you safe

With summer coming to an end, a variety of holidays will descend on us in the months to come.

Labor Day is the first one to come around, with this holiday weekend being one of the busiest of the year. From there, it's time to prepare for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and more.

If you plan on taking a road trip during any holiday, it's imperative that you know which steps to take to improve your safety.

Here are some of the many things you need to do:

  • Make sure your car is ready for the trip. Just because you are prepared for the trip doesn't mean that your vehicle is in the same condition. Make sure you check the tires, windshield wipers, brakes and overall condition. You don't want anything to go wrong that could jeopardize your safety.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings. There are many causes of road trip accidents, including but not limited to distracted driving, commercial trucks and speeding. You need to pay attention to your personal behavior, as well as what others are doing around you.
  • Travel at the right time. Depending on the length of your trip, this may be difficult to do. However, roads are often less crowded during the early morning hours. If you want to avoid the rush, stay off the road during the late afternoon and early evening.

Even if you follow these holiday driving tips, you could still be part of an accident. This is often the result of another driver making a mistake, such as speeding or texting.

If you are part of a car crash, move your vehicle to safety and call 911. This will speed up the process of police and an ambulance arriving at the scene.

Depending on your injuries and other damages, you may eventually want to learn more about your legal rights. There are many steps you can take to receive compensation from the negligent party.
