Texas car accidents: 2 arrested in hit-and-run accidents

When someone dies in a Texas car crash, it is devastating for surviving family members. The tragedy is compounded, however, when deaths occur as a result of hit-and-run car accidents. The uncertainty of the details of the accident can weigh heavy on survivors, and it is difficult to attain closure. Information from a community public safety organization led to two recent arrests in separate hit-and-run incidents.

A 54-year-old man was riding his bicycle in the early morning hours. According to the Houston Police Department, the man was struck from behind and was thrown into a ditch across the street. A Crime Stoppers tip led police to a home where a vehicle had damage that is said to have matched that of the bicycle involved in the accident. Police say the owner of the vehicle initially claimed she hit a telephone pole while driving under the influence. Texts on the woman's cell phone apparently indicated she knew she had struck someone and that she needed to get rid of her vehicle.

In another incident, a man riding a motorcycle was struck head-on by a pickup truck that had crossed the median. After the crash, the truck crossed back over the median, and the driver did not stop to check on the motorcycle driver. The truck left debris on the highway, according to the police report. Crime Stoppers again provided information to the police regarding a vehicle with damage. This led to the 32-year-old owner of the truck who apparently claimed he could not remember the details of the accident.

Both drivers were charged with failure to stop and render aid. Anytime fatal car accidents occur in Texas, survivors must deal with the grief of losing a loved one. However, when the negligence of another driver is a factor in the deaths, family members sometimes decide to file a wrongful death lawsuit. A positive outcome in a lawsuit may result in compensation to the survivors to cover funeral expenses and other costs. A personal injury attorney can guide families throughout the litigation process.
