Losing a loved one is devastating, no matter what the circumstances. However, when someone dies due to another person's negligence, the loss seems all the more tragic. Drivers' negligent behavior may lead to fatal car accidents, such as one that recently occurred on a Texas highway.
According to the Houston Police Department, a 37-year-old man was driving a pickup truck on Highway 288. Reports state that he was traveling at a high rate of speed. The man swerved into the road, and his pickup struck a compact car.
The impact of the crash killed the driver of the compact car. Police report that his son and mother-in-law were also pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver's wife was also a passenger in the vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital with injuries, but is expected to survive.
The pickup truck driver and his two passengers were not injured in the accident. Police reported that the truck driver did not exhibit signs of intoxication. However, he was charged with possession of marijuana. The man was released on bond and will appear in court in May. More charges may be pending as the investigation of the case continues.
Should it be determined that drivers in Texas car accidents were negligent, the survivors of the family members may be entitled to pursue wrongful death litigation. A successful lawsuit could result in a monetary award to survivors to help them with unforeseen funeral expenses and other financial losses. Compensation may also be awarded for pain and suffering, loss of future earnings and/or companionship. An experienced personal injury attorney can assist families with the legal process and the goal of achieving a favorable outcome in such a case.
