Millions of drivers travel our nation's highways every day. Many laws are in place in Texas and throughout the country to ensure the safety of those traveling on the road by car, truck or other form of transportation. Unfortunately, accidents often occur and some result in serious injury or death. Some car accidents, like a recent one in Houston, are caused by the actions of a negligent driver, such as driving while intoxicated.
Early in the morning of Saturday, March 6, a black sedan was traveling east on Westheimer Road. According to police, an SUV ran a red light at a high rate of speed on a nearby feeder road. Reports state that the SUV crashed into the sedan. Officials pronounced the driver of the sedan dead at the scene of the accident. The passenger of the sedan was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the SUV also suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. He was given a blood test to determine the level of intoxication when police suspected he was drunk. The SUV driver now faces intoxication manslaughter charges.
Losing a loved one is always a devastating event. However, the loss seems even more tragic when fatal car accidents are caused by negligent behavior and could have possibly been prevented. Many Texas family members who have experienced similar losses consider filing a wrongful death lawsuit. A successful claim could help survivors handle the many expenses that are associated with hospital stays or funeral services. An attorney familiar with personal injury law can work with families to achieve a successful outcome in their case.
